SAN FRANCISCO — Pacific Gas and Electric Co. officials say they are not sure when power will be restored to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge after an outage left the bridge’s western span in the dark.
PG&E spokesman Joe Molica says a power cable failed around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, cutting power to more than 1,000 residents in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood as well as deck and tunnel lights on the bridge.
Early morning commuters were forced to cross the span in the dark, although the California Highway Patrol said traffic was not affected.
Molica said power was restored to almost all affected residents in San Francisco by 7:20 a.m. But he had no estimate on when power would be restored to the bridge.
Officials are still trying to determine what caused the cable to fail.
