A traffic stop by San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies on early Friday morning led to the recovery of stolen firearms and tools taken during an overnight burglary in Santa Cruz County, police said.
Deputies pulled over a suspicious vehicle around 2:15 a.m. on Friday traveling northbound Interstate 280 onto Sand Hill Road. Inside the car, deputies reportedly saw gloves, flashlights, masks and other items commonly used in burglaries, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The driver, 25-year-old Jose E. Matute Vaquedano, was unlicensed. He is also on probation for robbery and is prohibited from possessing firearms, deputies said.
A passenger, 27-year-old Mauricio Peralta Marin, was reportedly found carrying an illegal explosive device, according to authorities.
During the investigation, deputies located two rifles in the vehicle and determined they were stolen from a Santa Cruz County resident. Additional stolen tools and burglary tools were also recovered, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Santa Cruz County deputies later confirmed the items had been taken during a residential burglary earlier that night.
Matute Vaquedano and Peralta Marin were arrested and booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicions of possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, firearm-related offenses and possession of an explosive device.
