South City is the latest jurisdiction to start supplementing food benefits for its residents in light of a government shutdown that could affect recipients as soon as this weekend.
Due to an ongoing federal government shutdown, distribution of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits will halt starting Nov. 1 if a budget deal is not reached by then.
According to a county press release, about 35,000 county residents could stop receiving funds from CalFresh, California’s version of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. About $6.5 million in CalFresh funds are distributed each month in the county.
On Oct. 21, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved $900,000 for its service agencies to help fill the gaps in food assistance funding. Other jurisdictions are also looking at how to meet the needs of their low-income residents, with San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie recently announcing the city would cover the benefits for more than 100,000 of its SNAP recipients in the city.
During a South San Francisco City Council meeting Oct. 29, councilmembers approved $170,000 in one-time supplemental funds for SNAP recipients — about 1,700 households in the city — which may increase during the next council meeting pending budget negotiations.
“I’m just extremely, extremely worried about these 1,700 families,” Mayor Eddie Flores said.

The decision came about as part of a discussion on how the city would like to use the proceeds from a lucrative land sale. Most of the funding will go toward a long-awaited fire station upgrade.
“I’m not taking away anything from the fire station. I believe we will fully fund that,” Flores said.
The funds will be distributed through South City’s YMCA.
An increase in state and local reliance on key support programs is not just a result of the shutdown but will likely continue due to the passage of H.R. 1, or the One Big Beautiful Bill, which among other changes, expand work requirements and reduce eligibility and thus enrollment for CalFresh and Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program.
“We are not immune to what’s happening in Washington, D.C., but we are not powerless,” Flores said. “It’s a moment like this that requires us to lead.”
What South City and the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors conveniently leave out is that Democrats are the sole cause of the loss of SNAP. If you’re affected by a loss of SNAP, call your representatives and tell them to open the government. Meanwhile, if you know any Democrats, hit them up for food and see if they’re willing to support your families in need. Democrats are purposefully taking away your food so the least they can do is help you while they hold America hostage. Good luck. But never forget Democrats are the party of putting criminals and terrorists over the American people and allowing biological men to compete against biological women (and invade their spaces). Vote Republican.
