A federal grand jury has indicted two sons of a Berkeley real estate mogul for their alleged roles in a scheme that brought Indian nationals into the country illegally for work and sex.
The superseding indictment against Prasad and Vijay Kumar Lakireddy, filed Monday in U.S. District Court, marks the first time that allegations of rape have been raised against anyone involved in the Lakireddy case.
As part as the charge of conspiracy to commit immigration fraud and to import people into the country for immoral purposes, the indictment accuses the brothers of keeping a harem in Velvadam, India, where destitute girls from lower castes were kept to have sex with them and their father, 63-year-old Lakireddy Bali Reddy, when they visited the country.
Those girls were later brought into the United States, where the Lakireddys and Bali Reddy would force them into sex, the indictment charges. They did this by controlling most aspects of the girls' lives
