A man accused of stabbing a San Francisco Giants fan to death near SBC Park on Sept. 17 appeared in court Monday morning alongside another suspect who allegedly participated in the brawl that led to the fan's death.
Rafael Cuevas, 22, is accused of murdering Timothy Griffith, 21, of Redwood City, in a fight that allegedly began when Griffith bumped against Cuevas' car as Griffith and his friends were leaving a Giants game.
Cuevas stood in his orange jail attire next to Jeffrey Skifich, who is accused of assaulting Griffith's friend Carlos Ortega in the brawl along Terry A. Francois Boulevard.
Ortega was knocked unconscious and briefly hospitalized for his injuries. Prosecutor Braden Woods said today he hopes to combine Cuevas' and Skifich's cases, because "it was the same incident, same witnesses, just a different victim.''
Defense attorneys say Cuevas and friends were acting in self-defense.
Judge Charles Haines asked Cuevas and Skifich, who is out on bail, to appear in court again on Jan. 13 for a preliminary hearing. Woods said both sides are waiting for a complete medical examiner's report before proceeding with the case.
Though the defendants' appearance was brief and involved only scheduling, the courtroom was filled with their friends and family and with those mourning Griffith, who wear buttons with his picture.
