A San Mateo man was arrested Tuesday night after threatening a security guard at San Mateo Medical Center with a knife, then throwing incendiary devices at the hospital and staff before running away.
Officers located Miguel Boch-Chamale, 21, a few blocks away and arrested him for multiple charges.
At about 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, police received a call from near the medical center with the report of a loud bang, then received another call that a man threatened to kill a security guard with a knife while running at him, then threw an incendiary device at the hospital and staff. According to police, the security guard, fearing his life, discharged his weapon into the air.
Multiple officers immediately responded to the hospital, and San Mateo Medical Center staff activated their lockdown protocol. During the initial investigation, officers learned Boch-Chamale attempted to get into the hospital and was asked to leave by security staff. While in the parking lot, Boch-Chamale brandished a knife and threatened to kill a security guard. He then ran away, according to police.
Officers were able to get a description of Boch-Chamale and searched the area for him. He was located near the intersection of 36th Avenue and Colegrove Street.
The incendiary device was determined to be fireworks, according to police.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information relevant to this case is asked to contact the San Mateo Police Department at (650) 522-7700.
