A Half Moon Bay man has pleaded no contest to a phony threat for pretending like he was going to kill his co-workers at the same mushroom farm where a January 2023 mass shooting and July 2022 attempted murder occurred, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
Edin Guerraortiz, 24, an ex-employee of the farm, approached four farmworkers on their lunch break July 24, motioning as if he was concealing a handgun and shouting that they should kneel because he was going to execute them, Wagstaffe said.
He was sentenced May 21 to six months in county jail.
Guerraortiz was allegedly angry with the victims because they had teased him about his wife’s affair with another employee, Wagstaffe said previously, although the victims said in statements to police they didn’t know why he was threatening them and were terrified for their lives.
Guerraortiz said in police statements that he was just trying to scare the farmworkers and was not in possession of a gun, Wagstaffe said. He was also allegedly a regular methamphetamine user.
Wagstaffe said previously there was no known connection between Guerraortiz and the other crimes that had been committed on the property, though he acknowledged the recurrence of problems in the area.
