After 42 years of serving as the home and provincial headquarters of the Sisters of St. Francis, Redwood City's Mount Alverno is going on the market.
The 25.7-acre property consists of a 100,000-square-foot four-story building and is expected to receive much interest because of its secluded location in the Farm Hill area of Redwood City, views of the San Francisco Bay, and convenience to Interstate 280 and downtown Redwood City.
With the increasing number of aging members in this self-supported convent, the costs of operating the grounds and its conference center now exceed the sisters' incomes. Sister Maria Elena Martinez, provincial minister for the Sisters of St. Francis, estimates that the convent has, at most, only 10 years to continue providing for aging and infirm sisters. She and her fellow sisters are "experiencing a sense of real regret that we cannot continue the worthwhile and valued ministry that takes place at Mount Alverno." The conference center be available for rent at least until Spring 2004.
As for the future of the Mount Alverno property, the sisters have undertaken a community process during the last 30 days to help identify issues and concerns. Focus groups have been held with residents in the immediate area and an open meeting for the general public is scheduled for Tuesday April 22, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. in the conference center at 3910 Bret Harte Drive. <
