In approving a proposal to nearly double the square footage of two previously-approved office buildings at Bay Meadows, San Mateo city officials weighed last week whether enough commercial areas and parking would be included among the mix of retail, office and residential space at the massive, mixed-use development.

With two of the five office buildings expected to line the Caltrain tracks completed, residents and new workers have already moved into the transit-oriented redevelopment of the former horse race track, which is home to 18 acres of parks and open space, tech companies like SurveyMonkey and Guidewire Software and retail tenants like Blue Bottle Coffee, Tin Pot Creamery and Fieldwork Brewing Company.

And we wonder why the cost of housing keeps escalating. Until office development is curtailed look for more congestion on the freeways and higher housing costs.

Clearly, this whole process is a joke...double the commercial development because Wilson Meany wants it that way? What about the original approvals?... Years were spent, with supposed input from the public, to come up with the Bay Meadows plan. Don't approvals mean anything now?

Didn't the city recently allow Franklin Templeton Investments to double their originally commercial square footage also?

Hasn't the mismatch between residential and commercial (jobs) been discussed as a serious major issue here in San Mateo? But what the business community and trade unions want they get. It's been that way for years...

WHERE is the world class city plaza that Wilson Meany promised they would build if they got their project approved???...They promised to build a world class plaza with story boards and lots of hoopla. They compared it to world renown developments both around the US and internationally....at this point though, I guess that doesn't mean anything either cause I'm just not seeing it, and with the City in the developers pocket, I won't hold my breath...
