A yellow Labrador puppy is safe at the Peninsula Humane Society after being rescued from U.S. Highway 101 just outside of the San Francisco International Airport by a passing motorist.
The man returning to his San Mateo home after arriving at the airport nearly hit the puppy as he neared the ramp leading to Highway 101 around 7:30 p.m., according to Scott Delucchi of the humane society.
He rescued the puppy and brought it back to the airport to see if it had been separated from its owners there, but when it wasn't claimed he took it home.
The following day he took it to a local veterinarian to get vaccinated and on Wednesday he took it to the humane society in hopes of reuniting it with its owners.
According to Delucchi, the puppy is a male Labrador between 11 and 12 weeks old in excellent condition. He had no identification when brought in.
Delucchi notes that the humane society is grateful to the puppy's rescuer because the little dog would likely not have made it through the night near the busy highway.
"We know that someone is missing this dog and the hard part is it could be someone out of the area," Delucchi said Sunday.
If no one comes forward with information to demonstrate that they are the puppy's owner, than the shelter will check to see if his rescuer would like to keep him, and then if not, he will go up for adoption as early as March 18.
The humane society, Delucchi reports, has not euthanized a single healthy dog or cat for more than two years.
