The San Mateo City Council is asking the city's Human Resources Commission to take another look at its recommendation on how to allocate nearly $400,000 in federal money.
The commission will reassess its funding formula at its March 14 meeting and make a new recommendation to the City Council on March 18.
Primarily, the commission will assess how it can find $10,000 for the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County. The money would be 10 percent of its annual operating budget, said executive director Peter Reid.
Legal Aid provides legal advice, counseling and representation on civil matters for low-income people. It asked the city for money to fund a staff person who coordinates pro bono attorney work, Reid said.
The money comes out of a federal pot of housing and community development grants that are funneled to various nonprofits in the city every year. The nonprofits must apply for the money and describe what they will do with it.
This year, the Human Resources Commission ranked each applicant based on the services it provides. Although the process was less tumultuous than in years past, it also removed the Legal Aid Society from the funding list.
