The Peninsula Humane Society honored its volunteers and other members of the community at its annual Paws for Applause ceremony this past weekend.
The San Mateo Daily Journal was among the winners for the media award. Other media award winners were Gentry Magazine, KQED and KRON-TV's "Bay Area Backroads"
Volunteer of the year is Francesca Lord who was honored for her work in the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Other winners included: Kirsten Davis, rookie of the year; Katel Lemarchand, down and dirty award; Barbara Wenzel, ambassador of the year award; Sandy Duffy, most inspirational; Lisa and Tracy O'Brein, behind-the-scenes award; Lari Nerli, Jack of all trades award.
The Veterinary Award was presented to Don Conkling; the Business Award was presented to Comcast Cable in Burlingame; the Humane-itarian Award was presented to Nell Newman, president of Newman's Own Organics; and the Animal Award was presented to Sport, a Shepherd-Rottweiler mix who saved a man from possible drowning while out on a walk along Coyote Point with his owner Arthur Lillard.
