Thanksgiving in San Mateo would not be complete without the annual arrival of the Harley Owners Group (HOG) at the San Mateo County Hospital. For over five years, they have made this visit to drop off toys for children for the holiday season.
"It is amazing to watch," said Michelle Carter, a volunteer at the hospital. Over 100 people on their Harley Davidsons will ride into the parking lot, drop off their wrapped presents, designated for either a boy or a girl, and ride off en masse.
Hospital staff then takes these presents and distributes the majority of them to the county's nine clinics. "The clinic regulars come by and pick up the presents," Carter said. She added that most of the children come from low-income families.
This Harley Davidson extravaganza will take place today at 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the county hospital. The HOGs will stop for a quick cup of coffee and donuts at the hospital before heading off to a brunch at the Alpine Inn in Portola Valley.
