June 12 was the beginning of Filoli’s Summer Nights Program, which runs through Sept. 19 on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Special events will include live music, food trucks and pool parties. Here Curatorial Specialist Bobby Gamba shows some personal grooming articles that wealthy travelers might bring on holiday. The dress belongs to a member of the family of William Bourn II, the gold mine owner who built the estate in 1915.
As the evenings warm and days lengthen, Filoli Historic House & Garden is now available to wander for special events and extended hours throughout the summer months.
The historic Woodside property located south of the Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir will host its usual array of special programming with a few additions, such as fruit Popsicles made from garden crops to cool you off as you explore the 16 acres of pristinely-kept gardens.
Filoli’s Summer Nights invite visitors to have access to the grounds after hours, enjoy acoustic music, food trucks and drinks from 5-8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays — an extra day added to address popular demand.
The mission of Filoli is to connect its rich history with its vibrant future through the celebration of beauty, nature and shared stories, President and CEO Kara Newport said.
“This is why we really like to open Filoli for evening events in the summer because you get this every night,” Newport said, pointing to the fog rolling in over the Santa Cruz Mountains. “You get the sunset, the beauty, it’s a really important part of our message.”
Part of the evening experience includes a unique pop-up learning spot that makes an aspect of the estate usually closed to the public available to visitors. A different grounds feature, such as the longest continually operated greenhouse in the country, and archival curation will be on display each night.

Beyond the house and gardens, visitors can hike the many trails spanning across the more than 650 acres of natural lands. Honoring the land Filoli sits upon, the new Lamchin Interpretive Center shares the story of the Lamchin, an independent tribe of the Ramaytush Ohlone people.
The newly opened Spring Creek loop, and other trails limited to guided-access, are available to explore through 90-minute guided sunset tours on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning July 10 through Aug. 15. Tickets for hikes include admission to Summer Nights.
Also new this year, Filoli will also host Pool Parties Tuesday evenings for a chance to lounge on the lawn, dine poolside and take a dip. Those interested can either buy a ticket just for pool access and lawn space, or upgrade for a guaranteed poolside chair, table service, a keepsake towel and more.
Summer favorites are back again, such as its Flora Parties, where reservations can be made to get expert instruction on making flower arrangements, and the Art Walk the last weekend of July that will feature more than 40 artisan booths. The summer concert series will also return in August, featuring live music ranging in genres from bluegrass and bluesy rock to mariachi and Latin jazz.
All ticket events include access to the house and gardens, perfect for exploring and photo opportunities. It is open for regular admission every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission costs $38 and tickets can be purchased online at filoli.org ahead of time.
