Chris Carpenter, general manager of the San Mateo County Event Center, resigned his post Wednesday just three days before the start of the county fair, the venue’s largest annual attraction.
Carpenter was hired in 2003 and oversaw expanded event sales and services and substantial revenue growth during his tenure, according to a statement.
Carpenter quit just two weeks after the San Mateo County Exposition and Fair Association Board of Directors conducted an “employee evaluation and goals” of his performance May 25.
News came as a shock to some vendors who learned Monday that Carpenter would be leaving.
A vendor working the fair said she was told by Event Center staff that “it was time” regarding Carpenter’s departure.
Current chief operating officers Dana Stoehr and Tim Smith will take over the general manager’s position on an interim basis while the board conducts a search for Carpenter’s replacement.
“Chris has devoted many years to the San Mateo County Event Center and fair as well as the San Mateo community,” board President Jonathan Gervais wrote in a statement. “We thank him for his dedicated service and wish him well in the next phase of his career.”
Carpenter previously was the general manager of the Nob Hill Masonic Center and director of booking and events at HP Pavilion.
He could not be reached for comment Wednesday for this article.
He is credited for spearheading capital improvements at the 48-acre property, most notably the renovation and launch of the Jockey Club satellite wagering facility and the creation of Creative Touch Catering, according to the statement.
Besides the fair, the event center hosts the Maker Faire, New Life Expo and the upcoming Fashion Market among dozens of other events.
The center has 195,000 square feet of space in seven buildings.
Carpenter helped lead a rebranding of the facility from the former San Mateo County Expo Center to the current event center with a new logo and website. Since then, companies such as Yahoo, Oracle and Visa have booked the facility for events.
Carpenter operated the event center under a management agreement with San Mateo County.
Gervais wrote in a statement that the board will continue to move toward facility upgrades and attracting new clients.
