The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office has filed a civil suit against a San Mateo salon for not complying with health and safety regulations pertaining to “permanent cosmetics” — lip and eyebrow tattoos.
The suit was filed Wednesday against BKD Ventures, LLC, which operates the K&K Beauty Salon in San Mateo. The suit alleges the shop has performed lip and eyebrow tattoos without properly handling needles and blades, and has violated related hygiene rules.
The District Attorney’s Office asserts allegations of unlawful business practices and false or misleading advertising.
The violations were discovered during inspections of the shop after the business received a permit in February 2016 to perform body art, according to the District Attorney’s Office. The violations were not corrected after an investigation by the county’s Environmental Health Services department and “multiple administrative enforcement efforts.”
The salon’s permit to perform body art was revoked in February 2017. The suit contends the shop did such work after that date, but Deputy District Attorney Joel McComb said his office does not contend that tattoo work is still being done at the salon.
A man who answered the phone at the salon Thursday declined comment on the suit before hanging up.
The first court date in this case is Dec. 13, McComb said.
