A $25,000 annual award will be granted to female-identifying individuals, 18-30 years old, who live, work or serve in San Mateo County, it was announced by Philanthropic Ventures Foundation San Mateo County Program Director Sheryl Young.
The award is inspired by the lifetime work of U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, who in her roles as a mother, attorney, congressional staffer and elected official has shown resilience in overcoming tragedy and life threatening situations and fortitude in taking on powerful political forces.
“We are excited for this new initiative that will recognize and showcase the work of young courageous women in our community,” Young said in a press release.
Women who apply should demonstrate courage, make an impact and exemplify the characteristics of compassion, resilience and integrity in their efforts to make the world a better place. The award is intended to further the awardee’s service efforts and can go directly to the awardee, to an affiliated nonprofit or social venture or as a scholarship to a university or for professional development.
The Women of Courage Award was founded by Cynthia Schuman, former longtime resident of Hillsborough, and an accomplished artist and designer, philanthropist and community leader, in honor of Speier.
