A 56-year-old Daly City man is being charged with murder for the May 2023 overdose of a 29-year-old Harvard graduate who died from fentanyl intoxication, Sean Gallagher, San Mateo County chief deputy district attorney, said.
The man, Phillip Ng, is in custody without bail for the murder of San Mateo resident Sarah Tillman, Gallagher said.
Tillman, who had ambitions of attending medical school, was found deceased in her apartment on May 6, 2023. She was struggling with addiction beginning early 2023 and was allegedly purchasing pills from Ng, Gallagher said.
She had overdosed once already in March 2023 from what she had thought was Xanax, but was revived with Narcan, Gallagher said. Texts between Tillman and Ng showed her alerting the alleged dealer to the possibility that the pills he were selling were dangerous, according to Gallagher. She allegedly began to purchase what she believed to be Oxycodone from Ng in the weeks and days leading up to her death, Gallagher said.
“We’re seeing these cases be prosecuted all over the state of California,” Gallagher said, noting that the possibility that street medications could be laced with dangerous drugs like fentanyl has become public knowledge. “Now everyone is on notice, and knows how dangerous it is.”
Tillman allegedly previously alerting Ng to the possibility that the drugs he were selling were adulterated with fentanyl contributes to his responsibility for her death, Gallagher said.
“In our mind, that makes him liable for murder,” he said.
