It was an Elegant Evening to say thank you as 120 members of the Alpha Beacon Christian School community honored three longtime faculty members at a banquet held at the Embassy Suites Hotel Ballroom in Burlingame Oct. 24. Margaret McCauley, the school’s music director who will be taking sabbatical leave, received a 15 year service award. McCauley directed musicals involving elementary and high school students and led students in outreach to the elderly at convalescent homes. Performing arts teacher Michele Gates was recognized for her 20 years of teaching and Venita Wilson, librarian and teacher, was honored with a 15 year service award. Wilson will be retiring and moving to Oregon with her husband, Bob, who has volunteered his time at the school.
Dr. David Nicholas, President of Shasta Bible College, served as emcee for the evening. Faye Chu, school events coordinator and wife of Alpha Beacon Lions girls’ volleyball coach Chris Chu, received special thanks for coordinating the Elegant Evening Banquet and guest invitations.

It was a how-to evening at the College of San Mateo Oct. 9 with a focus on clipping nails and proper brushing techniques. Students were not beauty queens in the making but rather were 23 pet lovers gathered to learn about cleaning ears, foxtails and burrs, teeth and tarter, spay and neuter issues, dog seatbelts and more. Instructor Kim Petersen said, "I provide dog owners with the confidence necessary to make their pets happier and healthier members of their family. I started teaching the class because I couldn’t believe the condition of some of the dogs that came into the grooming salon or just walking down the street. I’m trying to get dog owners to look at their dog’s nails and ears and coats and take care of issues before they get out of control.” Petersen, a dog groomer and part owner of a dog walking company, has been teaching dog grooming since 1999.
