After an out-of-control real estate market forced the Bay Area's youngest mayor out of his hometown, San Carlos Mayor David Buckmaster, 28, said goodbye last night and passed the gavel to Deputy Mayor Sally Mitchell. Buckmaster will relocate with his wife Kim to El Dorado Hills near Sacramento as soon as the $300,000 deal on a four-bedroom house on a half-acre lot is finalized.
The same house in San Carlos would cost more than a $1 million.
"My parents said, 'If we give you 20 grand will that help?' and I said, 'Nope, it's more like 300 grand," Buckmaster said after he relinquished his title to Mitchell at a City Council meeting last night. Buckmaster said he wanted to publicize his situation to call attention to young people's inability to buy a home in the Bay Area.
Buckmaster joined the San Carlos council five years ago and served as mayor this year.
His council term was set to expire in 2003. As mayor, Buckmaster attended regional government meetings, championed affordable housing, organized a city softball tournament, played host to visitors and visited schools and public events.
He said he enjoyed showing children and visitors to the city that everyday people could be politicians too.
"A group from Japan came and I was in jeans. They thought I was the doorman but they found out I was the headman," Buckmaster said. "I wanted to show I was a different kind of mayor for a different kind of city."
