The Jefferson and Terra Nova track and field teams made their way to Woodside for the final Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division tri-meet of the season.

The host Wildcats ended the regular season with a sweep of the Grizzlies and Tigers, giving the Woodside boys’ squad its first-ever PAL track and field championship in any division.
Evan Usher led the way for Woodside (8-0 PAL Ocean) with a Central Coast Section top-10 throw in the shot put, as the Wildcats won 120-15 over Terra Nova, and 74-43.
The Wildcats earned individual wins in all but one event. Usher earned three first-place finishes. The junior showed off his strength with a winning throw in the boys’ shot put of 54 feet, 3.5 inches, a serious distance that jumps to second place on the CCS leaderboard for 2024. Only Serra junior Luke Lewis has done better at 58-6.
Usher also proved the fastest runner of the meet in the boys’ 100, recording a personal record 11.45, followed by Woodside junior Carmel MendesGrassia in 11.63, and Jefferson senior Brendan McKittrick, both also PRs. Usher also earned a win in the boys’ 4x100 relay, teaming with senior Cal Adasiewicz, freshman Marlo Harding and sophomore Brody Gentner for a time of 44.16.
Harding earned three wins, taking first place in the boys’ 200 in 22.58. He also shared the 4x400 title with sophomore Zander Pfeifer, and seniors Nathan Mooney and Giovanni Di Grande in 3:41.92. Hardin also took fourth in the boys’ 100 in 11.76.
Mooney and Adasiewicz each claimed two wins for the Wildcats. Adasiewicz enjoyed an impressive win in the boys’ pole vault with a top vault of 12-6. Mooney won the boys’ long jump with a PR of 21-2, finishing a foot ahead of McKittrick’s PR of 20-2.

The only outlier on the boys’ leaderboard was Jefferson senior Jesse Abude, who hit the tape for first place in the boys’ 400 meters in 55.29 seconds, trailed by senior teammate Daren Masangcay’s second-place time of 57.01. Woodside’s Pfeifer took third in 57.46.
Jefferson junior hits the quad
Jefferson junior Sarah Santos earned four wins on the day, including a PR in the girls’ 200 in 27.16.
Santos also led the field in the 400 in 1:06:48 and earned two relay wins. She teamed with junior Christel Samson, senior Chaya-Bella David and junior Sophia Lopez in the 4x100 for a top time of 52.90, with Santos out-touching Woodside anchor Lilie Parodi and the Wildcats’ second-place time of 52.93. Santos, Davie, Lopez and senior Angella Ferrer won the 4x400 relay by plenty in 4:32.80.
Terra Nova sophomore Emilia Ellison ruled the distance events, taking first place in the girls’ 1,600 meters in 6:12.16, as well as the 3,200 in 14:55.67. She also took second in the 800 in 2:45.49.
Woodside was led by sophomore Pearl Marsyla and junior Heloise Ryhorchuk, each winning two events. Marsyla won both girls’ hurdles events, taking first place in the 100 hurdles in 19.93, and in the 300 hurdles in 52.63. Both the sophomore’s times were PRs. Ryhorchuk tied for first place in the girls’ high jump with teammates Cailin Lee, each hitting a 4-2. The height was a PR for Lee. Ryhorchuk also took first place as the only competitor in the triple jump in 28-2.
The final regular-season track meet is Saturday, with the CCS Top Classic being held at Los Gatos High School. The postseason kicks off Thursday, April 25 with time trials for the PAL Varsity Championships. The PAL finals will be held Saturday, May 4.
