Terra Nova shortstop Brody Finale fields a ground ball during a round of batting practice after Wednesday’s varsity baseball season opener was postponed due to the visiting team pulling a no-show.
Terra Nova was all ready to play its first on-campus baseball game in two years.
Even with worries the weather wouldn’t hold up, the Pacifica public school’s newly resurfaced field with state-of-the-art synthetic turf, and a hyper-efficient drainage system, had fourth-year manager Jared Milch confident his Tigers would get the game in.
It was a big date on the calendar, at that — the 2026 season opener. But as opening day starting pitcher Cooper Santamato was stretching out in the bullpen alongside catcher Joey Donati, the visiting team still hadn’t arrived.
“Joey had his gear on,” Santamato said. “We were in the pen. We were ready to go.”
That’s when word came down the game was to be postponed. It wasn’t inclement weather that sacked Terra Nova’s big day. It was scheduled visitor San Lorenzo Valley that derailed the festivities by pulling a no-show.
“Just a little disappointed,” Santamato said. “I was ready to get the opening day start and get on our new field for the first time.”
The game has been rescheduled for Thursday at Terra Nova. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.

Milch said he started to doubt Wednesday’s game would be played about 30 minutes prior to start time. Milch said he communicated with San Lorenzo Valley, and was told they mixed up the varsity and junior-varsity start dates. The schools’ two JV teams were slated to play Thursday.
“I guess ... when he was doing his schedule, he said he saw on the last email the 26th, which was supposed to be the JV game,” Milch said.
That JV game is now up in the air.
The Tigers last played a home game on campus in 2024. They played all 26 games last season on the road, while practicing mostly at neighboring Pacific Bay Christian, as the private school two miles around the bend on Linda Mar Boulevard hasn’t fielded a baseball program since 2023.
Terra Nova got onto its newly refurbished field for the first time for practice Feb. 2. The Tigers ultimately spent Wednesday doing more of the same, only with a bigger audience than usual as dozens of family and friends, regaled in black and yellow, showed up for the game. Even the game umpires made an appearance, arriving at the field 15 minutes before game time, only to turn right back around when they were informed the game was scratched.
“Just feeling for the kids,” Milch said. “I guess some empathy for the kids with how long they’ve been waiting to play a real game on that new diamond. But hopefully all is well now. ... So, they’ve just got to wait one more sleep.”
