The Nueva Mavericks (1-0) swept to victory Tuesday in their season opener, rolling in straight sets 25-20, 25-15, 25-16 at home in non-league action over Pinewood (1-1).
Freshman outside hitter Julia Cai made plenty of noise in her varsity debut, totaling a match-high 12 kills and a remarkable nine service aces. Nueva totaled 17 aces, with junior Zoe Chien totaling three and junior June Lee two. Sophomore outside hitter Langely Vassallo added seven kills.
Pinewood was paced by senior Mailey Wang’s six kills and 10 digs.
Nueva is coming off a third-place finish in the Private School Athletic League — a small six-school division which includes Summit Shasta, Design Tech and three San Jose-based teams — and a quarterfinal appearance in the Central Coast Section Division V playoffs.
TUESDAY
Menlo-Atherton 3, Menlo 1
The Bears (2-1) rallied in a non-league home matchup 25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22 against Menlo School (0-2). It marks M-A’s the third straight win over crosstown Menlo dating back to last season in head-to-head play.
Freshman setter Calista Chou drove the ship to the tune of 27 assists, while adding three service aces. Chou fed senior outside hitter Sophie Marks for 14 kills, while senior outside hitter Jocelyn Chang added 11 kills and eight digs. Senior libero Kylie Winters served up a storm, scoring four aces to go with 10 digs.
With head coach Denny Falls returning for his third season, M-A is coming of back-to-back championships in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division. The Bears qualified for the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs and the CIF Northern California Division I tournament both seasons.
Sacred Heart Prep 3, Burlingame 0
The Gators (1-0) won their season opener, sweeping 25-13, 25-15, 25-23 at home against Burlingame in non-league play. The Panthers (1-1) were led by junior Jordan Toomey’s seven kills, while senior Sam Hollrah totaled three aces and 14 digs.
Summit Shasta (2-1) earned its second straight win 21-25, 25-14, 25-13, 25-14 in non-league action at El Camino (0-1).
Carlmont (1-2) went to five sets, but fell 18-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-13, 15-5 at took unbeaten Homestead-Cupertino (7-0).
Notre Dame-Belmont (2-0) won its second straight 25-17, 25-9, 26-28, 15-8 at Sequoia (4-2).
Crystal (2-0) has yet to drop a set this season after rolling 25-10, 25-15, 25-14 at home against Design Tech (0-1).
