Carlmont 238, San Mateo 329
The Scots had four of their five scoring golfers card sub-50 rounds on the challenging Crystal Spring Golf Course in Hillsborough.
Sophomore Tessa Lee led the way for Carlmont (1-1 PAL Bay), shooting a 4-over 40 to earn low-round honors. Karuna Mungali carded a 46, while Kathryn Winters and Lindsay Wong both shot 48s.
Sophomore Dhuyti Chandrashekar led San Mateo (1-2), finishing with a 58.
Sequoia 186, El Camino 201
Colts senior Saoirse Price shot a 2-over 29 for low-round honors on the day, but it was the Ravens who won the match at Mariners Point Golf Complex in Foster City.
Sequoia (3-0 PAL Ocean) had its five scoring golfers finish within six shots of each other. Kayla Royad, a senior, led the way, carding a 35. Olivia Macuga was a shot back at 36, while Presley Ackerholt and Addy Mahon each finished with 37s. Kaitlyn Knockey rounded out the scoring for the Ravens with a 41.
Juliana Bazlamit had a 39 for El Camino (0-2), Adeline De la Cruz and Ryley Saavedra each posted 44s. Ellie De La Cruz rounded out the scoring for the Colts with a round of 45.
Girls’ tennis
Carlmont 7, Mills 0
Blowouts were the order of the day on the first day of the PAL tennis season. The two-time defending Bay Division champ Scots had little trouble in beating the promoted Vikings.
Carlmont (1-0 Bay Division) won all seven matches in straight sets. New No. 1 singles player Zoe Hendricks won her match at love, 6-0, 6-0. Megan Bence, playing at No. 2 singles, dropped only two games in a 6-0, 6-2 victory. The Scots’ No. 2 doubles team of Bhaoya Raman and Hailey Kwok also lost only two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Mills drops to 0-1 after being promoted from the Ocean Division.
Sequoia, 6, Half Moon Bay 1
The Ravens, who moved from the Ocean Division to the Bay for the 2025 season, cruised past the Cougars.
Three of the matches went three sets, with Sequoia (1-0 PAL Bay) winning two of them. At No. 1 singles, Sequoia’s Xienna Ma had to rally from a set down to beat HMB’s Sofia Guzman. Guzman won the first set in a tiebreak 7-5, but Ma rallied to win the second set 6-2 to force the third-set, super tiebreaker where Ma prevailed, 10-8.
The No. 3 singles match between Sequoia’s Natalie Tha and HMB’s Andrea Galindo also went three sets and again the Ravens player rallied from a set down to post a 4-6, 6-2, 12-10 victory.
The No. 2 doubles match also needed three sets to be decided, with Half Moon Bay’s Fiona Lucas and Natasha Dudash winning 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 over Sequoia’s Emma Wang and Linda Wu.
Menlo-Atherton 5, San Mateo 2
The Shani Podell Era began at M-A with the Bears taking down the Bearcats.
Podell replaces longtime head coach Tom Sorenson, who stepped down after the boys’ tennis season this past spring.
New No. 1 singles player, Marisa Hou, won her match 6-2, 6-1 to lead a singles sweep for M-A (1-0 PAL Bay).
San Mateo (0-1) won two of three doubles matches, including at No.1 where Madison Alden and Rishika Mukherjee posted a 6-3, 6-2 win.
Westmoor 4, South City 3
In the best match of the day, the Rams pulled out the Ocean Division victory with a win at N0. 3 doubles.
Erin Kwok and Hapi Estipona needed a first-set tiebreak to win the first set before clinching the match with a 7-6, 6-2 victory.
South City (0-1) won three of the four singles matches, led by Mackenzie Gogna at No. 1, who lost only two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win.
Oceana 4, El Camino 3
The Sharks and Colts also played a barnburner, with the Sharks coming out on top.
Sara Byun needed three sets to win at No. 1 for Oceana (1-0 PAL Bay), beating Lia Woo 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.
Zayna Juhar, playing at No. 2 singles for El Camino (0-1), prevented the singles sweep with a 7-6(5), 6-1 win.
Hillsdale 7, Terra Nova 0
The Tigers were no match for the Knights, who won all seven matches at love.
Jenna Wan won at No. 1 singles for Hillsdale (1-0 PAL Ocean), which moved from the Bay to the Ocean this season.

Woodside 6, Capuchino 1
The Wildcats were moved from the Bay to the Ocean for 2025 and they opened with a dominant win over the Mustangs.
Malia Furukawa led the way for Woodside (1-0 PAL Ocean), winning her No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0.
Capuchino (0-1), which has struggled to field full teams recently, did have players in all seven spots and got a win from its No. 1 doubles team as Lily Cunningham and Amelia Bautista posted a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Sacred Heart Prep 4, St. Ignatius 3
The Gators picked up a big non-league win in knocking off the CCS stalwart in Atherton.
SHP (5-2 overall) swept the four singles matches in straight sets, led by Charlotte Weber at No. 1 singles. The senior dropped only three games in a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
The match of the day came at No.1 doubles, where the SI tandem beat SHP’s Abigail Gruber and Sadie Harmssen in a third-set super tiebreak — 7-5, 4-6, 12-10.
Volleyball
Aragon 3, Mercy 1
The Dons got one last tuneup ahead of Thursday’s PAL Bay Division opener by beating a tough Bears squad in four sets — 17-25, 25-11, 25-18, 25-17.
Aragon (5-2) was led offensively by sophomore Emilia Kunkel, who finished with 13 kills. Caitlyn Robertson added 11 kills for the Dons. Kunkel also shared the team lead in digs as she and Claire Richards each finished with 11.
Aragon was a menace at the service line, serving up 14 aces. Devyn Lee had four of them and Gabriella Xiao added three more.
Lee and Xiao combined for 33 assists for the Dons.
Mercy falls to 5-4 on the season.
In other action ...
Capuchino (3-0) stayed undefeated with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-19 win over Pacific Bay Christian (2-2).
Summit Shasta (6-3) swept past Westmoor (2-5), 25-15, 25-15, 25-16.
Sequoia (5-2) cruised past Mills (1-8) in three sets — 25-12, 25-11, 25-12.
Half Moon Bay (4-1) needed four sets to get past Terra Nova (0-4) 25-9, 25-12, 23-25, 25-15.
Crystal (3-1) swept past Nueva School (2-1) — 25-19, 26-24, 25-19.
Sacred Heart Prep (4-0) stayed undefeated with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-18 win over Menlo-Atherton (2-3).
Flag football
Sacred Heart Prep 26, Los Gatos 7
Up just a touchdown at halftime, 13-7, the Gators pulled away from the Wildcats in the second half of their non-league game.
SHP quarterback Ryleigh Longaker threw three touchdown passes. Cate Hansen caught two of them among her 110 receiving yards. Hansen also got it done on defense, returning an interception for her third touchdown of the game.
In other action ...
Aragon (0-1) opened its season with a tough 7-6 loss to Burton-SF (4-0).
Los Altos (4-2) took down Hillsdale (1-3), with a weird 6-2 score.
Boys’ water polo
Gunn 13, Hillsdale 12, 3 OTs
The Titans handed the Knights their first loss of the season in a thrilling one-goal game that wasn’t decided until the sudden-victory third overtime.
The first two OT periods are mandatory.
Hillsdale (2-1) trailed 9-6 going into the fourth period, but outscored Gunn (1-1) 5-2 in the fourth to force overtime. Gunn tallied once in the first OT period, but Hillsdale countered with a goal in the second OT session, setting up the winner-take-all third overtime.
Isaiah Yeager paced the Hillsdale offense, finishing with eight goals and two assists. Parker Lee added four assists for the Knights, while goalie Jorge Trujillo finished with six saves.
