College of San Mateo head softball coach Nicole Quigley-Borg’s 700th career win was a downright thriller.

The Bulldogs (3-0 Coast, 23-0 overall) won their 23rd straight to start the year with a 2-1 victory last Thursday over Hartnell College (2-1, 22-5) on the Hilltop, but relied on a game-ending at ’em ball to it. CSM led 2-0 going into the seventh, but Hartnell rallied to score once on a Mikayla Sanchez RBI single, before Quigley-Borg summoned reliever Nia Mapa to pitch with runners on first and third and one out.
Mapa ran the count full to Hannah Sanchez, but the sixth pitch of the at-bat was a line drive to the left side of the infield. Shortstop Peyton Huber gloved the liner for the second out of the inning, then threw behind the runner at first for a game-ending double play, stranding the potential tying run at third.
Mapa not only earned the save in relief, but helped power CSM at the plate. The sophomore clubbed a solo home run in the fourth inning, her 12th of the year, to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Katie Johnson also homered in the game, a solo shot in the second, her eighth.
Freshman left-hander Lola Sierra earned the win, allowing one run on six hits through 6 1/3 innings of work. Sierra’s record improves to 11-0.
Quigley-Borg earned her first win as CSM’s head coach in 2007. Thursday’s victory marks the Bulldogs’ 39th straight win dating back to last season.
