Editor,

The Daily Journal’s recent op-ed on California’s 30x30 initiatives in San Mateo County emphasized the important role of local leaders in conservation. On field tours in the Santa Cruz Mountains with the Resource Conservation District team, I witnessed firsthand their dedication to real conservation efforts, as exemplified by their coho salmon and steelhead trout habitat restoration projects. If California is to protect 30% of its land and water by 2030, it’s essential to acknowledge the thoughtful, evidence-based contributions by its RCDs that balance the needs of community residents with environmental goals. They have earned our trust and continued support. Rather than backing flashy projects, we should back organizations that have proven their worth over the years. By collaborating with these organizations and building on their existing efforts, we can achieve sustainable solutions for both California’s environment and its residents, and create lasting changes that will protect our state’s natural beauty for future generations.
