In response to the statement of Christina Corpus to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors that “I answer to the people of this County who elected me,” I say: “Sheriff Corpus, do the right thing and resign without creating further turmoil in our Sheriff’s Office. I voted for you two years ago in the belief that a young Hispanic woman who had undoubtedly suffered the hard knocks of coming up through the ranks of local law enforcement would provide enlightened leadership as sheriff. Sadly, based on the conclusions of Judge Cordell, this is not the case.”
I have known LaDoris Cordell since she was at Stanford Law School, and I can say unequivocally that her intellect, judgment and ethics are beyond reproach, as attested by the fact that she is one of the most highly respected retired judges to have ever served on the Superior Court. When one learns that an elected official, especially a woman, is accused of wrongdoing, one assumes that there are two sides to the story. However, reading the conclusions of Judge Cordell, it is abundantly clear that the sheriff should do the right thing for the people who elected her and resign.
