There are no laws regulating the installation of cell towers in San Mateo. Telecom companies are in a race to install a cell tower on every block in every residential neighborhood and business area of our city. The telecoms have admitted that these towers are needed to advance 5G networks which require the towers be closer to customers. 5G has not been developed and tested so why all the rush? The answer is simple, if the telecom does not substantially change the dimensions of a 4G tower, they can quickly upgrade it to 5G without providing any notice to residents.
The City Council will finally consider a draft ordinance regulating cell towers in the public right of way 7 p.m. June 18. San Mateo will be inundated with excessive, unnecessary and possibly harmful cell towers unless the City Council promptly acts to strengthen the draft ordinance to protect citizen safety and property values. Citizens should be given the opportunity to provide substantial input into the draft. This is our home. Telecoms should be challenged as to whether proposed 4G cell towers are really necessary to close a substantial gap in service.
Do you want multiple cell towers in front of homes, schools, day care centers and your favorite restaurant? Should the business strategy of telecoms thwart citizen rights? Please get involved. Write the City Council. Attend the public meeting on June 18. Visit safesanmateo.com and sign the petition by San Mateo Citizens for a Safe Environment to City Council today.
