There’s a brief window of opportunity to enact bipartisan legislation that will lock in important climate progress, boost clean energy deployment and pave the way for Bay Area residents to experience more choice, reliability and lower household energy bills. Rep. Mullin, seize this opportunity. Ask your party leadership to pass the bipartisan Energy Permitting Reform Act by the end of the year.
Slow and outdated permitting processes mean that building more reliable and cleaner forms of energy happens at a snail’s pace, leaving us with archaic and polluting energy sources. But there is a solution: the bipartisan Energy Permitting Reform Act.
Renewable energy projects stand to benefit greatly from EPRA, even while it includes provisions for fossil fuel. Modeling shows the bill could reduce America’s climate pollution as much as 25% by 2050, making it a significant step toward our climate goals. Without these permitting reforms, we will miss out on about half of the potential carbon pollution cuts from the Inflation Reduction Act.
EPRA is supported by the Solar Energy Industries Association, American Council on Renewable Energy, American Clean Power Association and Clean Energy Buyers Association. It has already passed the Senate Energy and National Resources committee with bipartisan support.
Congress has an opportunity to ensure permitting reform protects community input, upholds environmental laws and leads to faster clean energy deployment. I implore you, Rep. Mullin, urge your party’s leadership to pass EPRA by all means possible now. End the 118th US Congress with this climate win.
Bravo Cynthia for your clear explanation of the “power” of EPRA in the critical role of clean air and clean energy. Rep Mullin, please fight to pass this important legislation now!
Permitting reform will improve grid and electricity reliability and lower the cost or electricity.
Our energy costs are higher than they need to be, in part because the current permitting rules are so dysfunctional. Just updating the existing transmission lines would reduce the risk of arcing and causing fires. And the newer wires are more efficient.
Esalinger - pray tell me where the provision for updating transmission lines is included in this biased bill. If the utilities and the CEC were behind it, it should get a nod but please notice the supporters. All are greenies who don't care about economics and the uneconomic ramifications of electrification. Mullin will vote for it because he thinks it provides political capital but he should be wiser and get some answers first.
