In his letter to the editor titled “The real threat to San Mateo,” Max Mautner claims that both Gary Isoardi and Peggy Brady have it backwards; San Mateo’s new apartments are not a parking debacle. Mautner points out that homebuilders can now provide the parking their buyers and renters actually use. While a single structured parking stall costs $50,000 or more to build, it’s a small amount added to a family’s 30-year mortgage. While he adds that the Gateway Project provides 140 bike parking spaces, without a garage, where else would they keep their bikes?
Often, people with two-car garages and two cars park on their driveway or the street because of the storage needed in their garage.
Max Mautner makes a good point that homebuilders aren’t sentimental and that they build what their residents will use. We also must factor in that they build to maximize their profit.
The real threat isn’t that our region is so unaffordable that our kids can’t move back — it’s that San Mateo will lose its appeal for our children and our employers.
