As a child in the 1950s, I loved visiting the old open-air Hillsdale Mall — climbing the Benny Bufano sculptures and ending with a slice at San Remo’s. As a young mother in the 1980s, the newly enclosed mall became a respite, a place to stroll with my children before picking up dinner at Stone Soup. For decades, Hillsdale has been a welcoming spot for people of all ages and income levels.
As a lifelong resident, I’m troubled by the fact that the new development seems geared mainly toward high-income earners and young professionals, with little consideration for lower-income residents, seniors or people with special needs. A project centered on luxury housing and offices, with minimal community space, looks and feels sterile and exclusive.
We risk losing accessible, inviting places where everyone can feel part of the community. San Mateo should champion truly inclusive development — where residents of all ages, abilities and incomes can thrive. The current plan needs to be rethought to ensure that meaningful community spaces are part of Hillsdale’s future.
