Like it or not, the driver's license has become the de facto, all-purpose identity card. It is the document used to verify that someone is who she says she is when cashing a check, applying for a job or, most significantly these days, boarding an airplane.
That critical ID function is one reason Gov. Gray Davis should veto AB 60. The bill by Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, would make it easier for immigrants who have entered the country illegally to obtain a California driver's license.
Cedillo is trying to make life easier for the millions of undocumented immigrants who work in low-wage California jobs. That's understandable, even commendable. But helping them to obtain what amounts to an all-purpose ID card is just too great a risk for California and the country.
