Rose Robbin, born Jan. 18, 1925, died March 28, 2011 with her son at her side.
Born in Camden, N.J., Rose attended Camden High School, after which she began a career in modeling. She won the title of Miss New Jersey in 1945 as a singer, and continued her career in modeling, along with commercials. She married, had children and later moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1956.
Rose came to California in 1962, living first in San Mateo and then moving to San Francisco in 1968, where she continued her singing career while also working for many years at the Jack Tar Hotel. Rosie’s husband was a pianist, and they performed at many jazz venues in San Francisco.
Rosie loved dancing and music, especially jazz, big band tunes and pop standards. Her favorites included Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Glenn Miller and the Dorsey Brothers. She also loved tennis, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, reading, being outdoors and "nosh,” according to her family.
She was very strong-willed, opinionated, independent and outspoken, with very high values, ethics and expectations. She had a wonderful sense of humor, was extremely generous, very loving and loyal, exceptionally empathetic of others and lots of fun, according to her family.
The memorial service will be held at Sneider & Sullivan & O’Connell Funeral Home in San Mateo 1 p.m. Sunday, April 10 with the funeral to follow at Hills of Eternity Cemetery in Colma.
