John Courtney, 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday March 1 with his family by his side. He was born on January 27, 1933 to Elizabeth and Edward Courtney in Butte, Montana.
A lifelong fan of Notre Dame football, John attended many tailgate parties and games with his friends and family.
After John graduated from Butte Central High he enlisted in the US Navy where he spent 2 years of active duty on an aircraft carrier during the Korean war. After 4 additional years of service, John received an honorable discharge in 1954. He proudly went to Gonzaga University on the GI Bill, to earn his degree in civil engineering.
In 1958 he moved to San Francisco where he met and married his first wife, Jacqueline Bellusci Courtney. In 1972 they moved to San Mateo to raise their family and never left. After 40 years as a CalTrans Civil Engineer he happily retired in 1998.
John is survived by his second wife, Agnes Courtney, devoted daughters, Ginger & Cynthia Courtney, son-in-law Landon Browning and three grandchildren, Courtney & Alec Petsche and Spencer Browning. John is also survived by his brother Michael Courtney of Butte, Montana.
Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 14, 2025 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1 Notre Dame Ave., San Mateo, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations are accepted at Alzheimer’s Association P.O. Box 96011 Washington, D.C 20090-6011
