LOS ANGELES — Federal agricultural specialists have discovered fruit flies in packages of mangos at a mail facility in the Los Angeles area.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Tuesday that inspectors on June 4 discovered fresh mangos infested with live larvae in packages described as dry food from Mexico. It was the second interception of mangos infested with larvae coming from Mexico in less than two weeks.
The larva was tested for identification, and determined to be a type of fruit fly that could damage U.S. fruit and other plant crops.
The mangos were destroyed.
