Some tips for Election Day: Make a plan to vote and don’t walk away while in line to vote when the polls close.
With California’s June 2 statewide primary election just a week away, election officials are reminding voters to know their rights.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 2. Voters who are still in line when the polls close have the right to vote, so they shouldn’t leave just because it’s 8 p.m., California Secretary of State Shirley Weber said.
In addition, registered voters may cast a ballot if even if their name is not on the list at their polling place. They will be given a provisional ballot, and their vote will be counted if elections officials determine they are eligible to vote, Weber said.
Voters may get a new ballot if they have made a mistake and haven’t already cast their ballot.
Residents voting by mail can drop off their completed vote-by-mail ballot at any polling location or vote center in the state. Voters should sign the ballot return envelope — county elections offices will compare that signature with the signature in the voter’s file before counting the ballot.
The California Voter Bill of Rights, printed in the Voter Information Guide sent to every active registered voting household in the state, will also be posted in every polling location and vote center.
