A 22-year-old Antioch man who allegedly shot at the St. Augustine Catholic Church in South San Francisco has been found eligible for mental health diversion court, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
The man, Debari Charvel Augustine was charged with eight felonies, including two counts of attempted murder, for shooting at the church with an unregistered and illegal assault rifle on Jan. 30.
Two female parishioners, 71 and 85, were inside, and they watched as he allegedly tried to force his way inside, then called 911, Wagstaffe said previously. Augustine was arrested that afternoon.
Now, Augustine — who is being held without bail — will go to mental health diversion court beginning Jan. 6, Wagstaffe said. If he receives mental health diversion, he will be able to complete a two-year program and have charges dismissed.
While the motive in the shooting remains unclear, Wagstaffe said previously that preliminary seizure of his writings indicates mental illness could have played a factor. He did not give a statement to authorities.
