A Menlo Park woman has been charged with 47 felonies for allegedly embezzling $28,488 in welfare funds while working at the San Mateo County Human Services agency, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
The woman, 48-year-old Maria Jaimes, was charged with 43 counts of identity theft for allegedly reactivating dormant client welfare accounts, issuing new access cards, forging recipient signatures, and then using the funds, Wagstaffe said.
The alleged embezzlement occurred over a period of nine months during Jaimes' tenure at the HSA’s East Palo Alto satellite office and was discovered when the HSA conducted an audit of the automated welfare system, Wagstaffe said.
The case was continued to April 26 for appearance of retained attorney and for entry of plea.
More gratitude to Mr. Wagstaffe, our high functioning district attorney. They should have him duplicated and sent to some other cities on the West Coast.
