An 83-year-old man died after his car went off Highway 101 in San Mateo and landed in a Caltrans lot sometime late Sunday or early Monday morning, authorities said.
PG&E workers discovered the crash while they were conducting maintenance on electrical boxes, the California Highway Patrol said.
The driver of the white 2010 Toyota Corolla was traveling on a transition road between eastbound State Route 92 and northbound 101 when the car went over a concrete rail for unknown reasons, the CHP said.
The Toyota landed in a Caltrans-owned dirt lot below the raised freeway and came to rest on its left side, with the driver partially ejected, according to the CHP. The driver, a resident of San Francisco, died at the scene.
Authorities don’t believe alcohol or drugs factored in the crash.
