A San Mateo man was found dead in San Mateo Creek at Gateway Park the morning of July 3, and police suspect he may have become intoxicated and drowned.
The body was found by a resident walking through the park at about 8:30 a.m., according to San Mateo police. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Juan Chamale Cozojay, 55. Police are investigating the incident and awaiting results from the Coroner’s Office to determine cause of death.
The park is known as a hangout and there is sometimes drinking there, police said, adding officers routinely walk through the park to look for that behavior.
