A 37-year-old man was arrested after allegedly trying to steal items from a Target store in San Bruno on Tuesday night and then trying to stab a security guard who confronted him, police said.

Officers responded at 9:40 p.m. to the Target store at 1150 El Camino Real and quickly located and detained San Bruno resident Marklimuel Liwag, according to police.

Investigators learned that Liwag tried to steal merchandise from the store when the guard confronted him. Liwag then allegedly charged at the guard with a large kitchen knife that he had taken from a store display, police said.

The guard took cover and avoided injury. Liwag then discarded all of the merchandise and fled through the adjacent parking structure before being arrested. The incident was captured on store surveillance footage, according to police.

Liwag was booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest and possession of illegal narcotics, police said.
