Bay Area librarians say they aren’t sure exactly how President Donald Trump’s executive order effectively gutting the Institute of Museum and Library Services will affect their libraries.

Some local librarians said they expect some of their programs to be affected, if not cut entirely, and said the cuts will have a larger effect on smaller libraries.

Let's consider efficiency in libraries, as in any business. Finally, perhaps cuts are in order.

"The percentage of employees who are truly efficient in their work varies depending on definitions and metrics used, but several studies provide insights:

12% of employees are fully productive, contributing more than six hours a day to actual task work.

21% of employees believe they are truly productive for an entire workday.

On average, employees are productive about 60% of the time, with office workers typically being productive for less than three hours a day."

Looking at my tax bill, which included the bond payment of our beautiful library, I wonder why we still need to lean on the federal government to subsidize library operations. Start charging for those who use it. The same folks who walk in with their $6 Starbucks coffee should be asked to pay for the library services.

Mr. van Ulden, you’re not the only one seeing library bond payments tacked onto property tax bills. I’m wondering why the federal government needs to subsidize library services or operations. I don’t recall library services being mentioned in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights so library services should be supported by states and local governments… Perhaps, as Lou has implied, libraries need to DOGE themselves.
