Caltrain’s base fare will be rising by 25 cents on July 1. The increase will boost adult base fares from $3.75 to $4, and eligible discount rider fares from $1.75 to $2.
The oldest continually operating rail system west of the Mississippi offers fully electric train service between San Francisco and San Jose in under an hour.
In September, Caltrain introduced new cars with free Wi-Fi, onboard digital displays, security cameras, power outlets at each forward-facing seat, changing tables in the toilets and improved under seat storage.
Caltrain says it’s currently running 104 trains per weekday, the highest ever, and more weekend service than at any time. Since the launch of electric service nine months ago, Caltrain has seen substantial gains in ridership, up 55% in May from a year earlier.
Caltrain said it delayed a 50-cent base fare increase in 2023 to avoid discouraging riders from getting on board during the post-quarantine recovery.
