The above article states that the city of San Mateo will spend $50,000 for public relations firms as a "go between" for the downtown project. What a waste of money-- San Mateo is far from the city it once was. All 'extra' money is spent "up town" as we in South San Mateo area call downtoen San Mateo.
Ten years ago when the park on Laurie Meadows Drive was built, we asked for one or two portables to be dropped on the site for a few recreation classes. Older citizens could avail themselves of exercise classes, teens could use it as a center in the evenings. Instead they "hang out" especially in the summer at Laurie Meadows shopping center. There is lots of noon ??? at the park to have community recreation programs.
To get to the recreation center on Alameda De Las Pulgas, it takes two buses. One goes from Pacific Ave. to the Hillsdale Mall. Then a person has to wait to connect to another bus that goes to Alameda De Las Pulgas-- I did this and it wasn't worth it. I don't drive and I know other people that don't drive on Bayshore anymore and don't like El Camino either: traffic has doubled in the past 10 years.
The bay area has turned into a 'rat race,' taxes go up every year, and South San Mateo residents can't even have a small recreation center, a small library branch, trees or something on the railroad dirt embankment (when tracks were raised for new underpasses 10 years ago)—we asked the city then; their reply was "no funds."
The money doesn't go to South San Mateo! However, what they don't want goes down here—like the skateboard park on El Camino.
