Longtime Arkansas assistant Fitz Hill will replace Dave Baldwin as football coach at San Jose State.
Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said Hill had accepted the Spartans' top job. The school scheduled a news conference for 1:45 p.m. PST Tuesday to announce the hiring.
"We are very proud of him. We are going to miss him," Nutt said. "Because of these players and this program, he is able to take a head (coaching) job. He has been here the longest of any of our assistants, and has done a great job."
After two seasons as a volunteer assistant, Hill joined the Arkansas staff as a full-time assistant in 1992. He has been recruiting coordinator for three years and has coached wide receivers for eight years.
Nutt said Hill would be on Arkansas' sideline when the Razorbacks play UNLV in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 21.
Nutt said Hill's hiring was a surprise to him.
"We talked earlier last week about that job," Nutt said. "That was his goal. He didn't think it would happen this quick. He had in mind he would be here for two more years. They pursued him pretty hard and offered him a good package, and he was ready to go. We will miss him."
Others reportedly under consideration for the job were Louisville assistant head coach Art Valero, Colorado State defensive coordinator Larry Kerr and UCLA offensive coordinator Al Borges.
Hill succeeds Baldwin, who had an 18-27 record in four seasons. He made a bitter departure from the school last week in the culmination of a volatile relationship with athletic director Chuck Bell.
Late on Sunday, Dec. 3, the school issued a news release stating that Baldwin had turned down a three-year contract extension offer and wouldn't return. That was news to Baldwin, who thought his agent was still in negotiations with the school.
San Jose State said Baldwin's camp had missed a deadline to reply to a contract offer. Baldwin said Bell, who took over the athletic department months after Baldwin was hired in 1997, planned to get rid of him all along.
After three losing seasons from 1997-99, Baldwin led the Spartans to a 7-5 record in 2000, the school's first winning year since 1992.
This year, San Jose State upset Stanford and ruined No. 9 Texas Christian's unbeaten season. The Spartans finished fourth in the Western Athletic Conference with a 5-3 record.
But the Spartans lost their final two games, including a 37-6 home defeat to Fresno State in their season finale that cost them a chance to play in the Silicon Valley Classic on New Year's Eve. San Jose State hasn't been to a bowl game since 1990.
