By virtue of one individual match win, Woodside girls’ tennis (13-1 PAL Bay, 14-1 overall) qualified for the Peninsula Athletic League Team Tournament with a 7-0 home victory Thursday over Westmoor (3-11 PAL Ocean).
With the win, Woodside shares the PAL Ocean Division championship with Hillsdale, as the two teams finished with identical 13-1 league records. As Woodside and Hillsdale split their season series, however, each with 4-3 wins over the other, the tiebreaker format to decide which team earned the Ocean Division’s one bid to the PAL Team Tournament was based on the number of individual match wins over other PAL Ocean teams.
The two Ocean Division frontrunners entered play Thursday with an equal amount of individual match wins. As Woodside won their regular-season finale 7-0, Hillsdale was defeating Capuchino, but by a score of 6-1, with the one loss — a 6-3, 6-2 victory by Cap No. 2 doubles Amelia Bautista and Katerina Sosa — standing as the margin deciding the playoff bid.
Woodside won each of its matches in straight sets. No. 1 single Malia Furukawa won 6-0, 6-0; No. 2 Charly Moore won 6-0, 6-2; No. 3 Grace Manuel won 6-2, 6-2; and No. 4 Bridgit Warren won 6-0, 6-0. No. 1 doubles Tatiana Berghold and Juliana Cortes won 6-0, 6-1; No. 2 doubles Peyton Atkins and Lucille Palmer won 6-0, 6-0; and No. 3 doubles Angela Truong and Addie Weston won 6-1, 6-0.
For Hillsdale (13-1, 14-6), No. 1 single Jenna Wan won 6-1, 6-0; No. 2 Emma Yuen won 6-0, 6-0; No. 3 Lia Svidler won 6-0, 6-0; and No. 4 Elise Heneghan won 6-0, 6-3. No. 1 doubles Julia Moir and Leila Alizadeh won 7-4, 6-3; and No. 3 doubles Kalea Kim and Olivia DeVincente won 6-3, 6-1.
The other three teams qualifying for the PAL Team Tournament are Aragon, Burlingame and Menlo-Atherton, the second-, third- and fourth-place teams in the upper PAL Bay Division. The Team Tournament is used to decide who earns the PAL’s second automatic bid to the Central Coast Section team playoffs. Carlmont, the PAL Bay Division champion, automatically earns the PAL’s first auto bid to CCS, and therefore has a bye to the PAL Team Tournament.
