Sequoia’s 5-4 senior Joslin Fiel led a standout defense effort with 26 digs as the Ravens (1-0 PAL Bay, 6-2 overall) held off visiting Burlingame (0-1, 3-7) for a 25-13, 12-25, 11-25, 25-20, 15-9 victory in Redwood City Thursday.
It is Sequoia’s first win over Burlingame since 2004.
Fiel added three service aces, while Sequoia totaled 13 aces as a team, led by junior Maya Matossian with four. Senior Katalina Tuipulotu recorded a double-double, leading the offense with 13 kills while adding 15 digs. Sophomores Kiera Winters and Samantha McMurtry scored 10 kills apiece. McMurtry added a team-high three blocks.
The victory marks the first time since 2019 the Ravens have won their league opener, and Sequoia’s 6-2 overall record is the program’s best start since 2015.
Sacred Heart Prep 3, Menlo 0
Sophomore outside hitter Leilah Abrams scored a match-high 20 kills to lead the undefeated Gators (1-0 WBAL Foothill, 6-0 overall) to the win in their West Bay Athletic League Foothill Division opener at neighbor Menlo School (0-1, 0-9).
Abrams’ average of 6.7 match kills per set marks a career high for the second-year varsity standout. She fell one defensive play shy of a double-double with nine match digs. Junior setter Kiley McGibben did record a double-double with 26 assists and 15 digs, both team-highs. Senior libero Peyton Fu-Sarosa added 13 digs for SHP.
With their sixth straight win, the Gators are off to their best start 2006, when the team won seven straight to open the year.
Aragon 3, Carlmont 1
The Lady Dons (1-0 PAL Bay, 6-2 overall) rode a double-double from Poppy McKenzie to a 25-14, 25-17, 17-25, 25-20 win in their Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division opener at home against Carlmont (0-1, 1-5). The sophomore outside hitter totaled 20 kills and 11 digs and recorded a .400 hitting percentage.
Junior attacker Caitlyn Robertson added 11 kills for the Dons, while sophomore Emilia Kunkel totaled nine kills, 20 digs, three service aces and two blocks. Junior setter Devyn Lee totaled 32 assists.
Hillsdale 3, Woodside 0
The Lady Knights (1-0 PAL Bay, 2-2 overall) earned their first sweep of the season with a 25-12, 25-21, 25-20 win at Woodside (0-1, 0-2) on opening day for Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division league play.
Senior Eliza Bell led Hillsdale’s offense with 11 kills, while senior Chloe Armstrong totaled seven kills on 15 swings with four service aces and three blocks. Senior Brooke Weaver anchored the defense with 15 digs.
Mills 3, Jefferson 1
The Lady Vikings (1-0 PAL Ocean, 2-8 overall) dropped the opening set of their Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division slate, but bounced back for a 13-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-15 victory at home against Jefferson (0-1, 1-2).
Junior outside hitter Reanna Ng swung at a .351 clip to lead Mills with 15 kills while adding seven service aces. Freshman Charlise added seven kills and two aces, senior Miila Hassan had seven kills and two blocks. Junior setter Tiffany Siu recorded a double-double of 25 assists and 15 digs, while senior Chloe Lee shared the team lead with 15 digs.
Crystal (0-1 WBAL Foothill, 3-2 overall) dropped its West Bay Athletic League Foothill Division opener 25-17, 25-19, 25-17 at home against Harker-San Jose (1-0, 3-3). The matchup featured last year’s two co-champs out of the lower WBAL Skyline Division, with both of them being promoted to the Foothill Division this season.
Notre Dame-Belmont (1-0 WBAL Foothill, 6-4 overall) breezed to a 25-12, 25-17, 25-10 home win over Notre Dame-San Jose (0-1, 3-6) at Moore Pavilion.
Design Tech (1-2) dropped its second straight on the road, getting swept 25-15, 25-22, 25-22 at Castilleja-Palo Alto (1-3).
San Mateo (1-0 PAL Ocean, 1-1 overall) earned its first win of the season with a 25-20, 25-8, 25-13 sweep at Westmoor (0-1, 2-6).
Terra Nova (1-0 PAL Ocean, 1-4 overall) rallied back from a first-set loss to claim its first win of the year 20-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-19 at home over South City (0-1, 1-3).
