Menlo-Atherton (8-3 PAL Bay, 12-12 overall) moved to within a half game of first place in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division baseball standings, erupting for a five-run fourth inning to claim a 7-3 win Saturday at King’s Academy-Sunnyvale (7-5, 14-11).
The Bears were off Friday, trailing first-place Burlingame by one game. But the Panthers fell 4-3 to Carlmont, opening the door for M-A to control its own destiny in pursuit of the Bay title. If the Bears win their final three games, they can do no worse than a co-league championship. Burlingame has two games remaining, a two-game series with King’s.
An RBI double by senior Max Brubacher in the fourth gave M-A the lead Friday, and senior Masataka Shudo followed with a two-run single. Shudo finished with three hits, including a double and three RBIs. Freshman pitcher Jake Scott allowed two runs on four hits through three innings of work to earn his first varsity win.
