’Cats grab piece of title

San Mateo’s Charlotte Velasquez strokes a two-run single in the third inning of the Bearcats’ 18-2 win over Terra Nova to clinch a share of the PAL Ocean Division title with South City.

The mission was simple for the San Mateo softball team Wednesday: beat Terra Nova, claim a share of the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division crown with South City.

If the Bearcats were feeling any pressure, they didn’t show it. The San Mateo offense got going early and the Bearcats put the game away with an 11-run fourth for an 18-2 victory in a game that was called after four innings because of the 15-run mercy rule.
