Editor,

Thank you for running David Lieb’s article on gerrymandering (“Analysis indicates partisan gerrymandering has benefited GOP” in the June 26 edition of the Daily Journal). The media needs to focus more on structural problems with congressional and state races, rather than the horse-race coverage that typically takes place every two to four years. Once more people learn about how unrepresentative our elected bodies are, they will demand change for the current process that will hopefully yield to better political outcomes for everyone. California took a step in the right direction with the citizens’ districting commission, but as ProPublica wrote in 2011, Democrats were still able to manipulate district lines in their favor (“How Democrats Fooled California’s Redistricting Commission ...”).
